Medical Website Design: What Builds Trust — and What Quietly Loses Patients

Patients decide whether to trust a clinic within their first 5 seconds on the site. Code-Site.Art's lead designer breaks down which design decisions build trust — and which work for your competitors.

The 5 seconds that decide everything

A patient opens 3–5 clinic websites in a row and compares. A few seconds each. In that time they don't read copy — they read signals. Tidy or not. Real people or stock. Obvious where to click, or not. Design is the first trust filter, and it does its work before the patient learns anything about your practitioners.

What builds trust

Real photos of practitioners and rooms. Stock reads instantly and works against you: "if they hide their own doctors — what else are they hiding?" Even tidy phone photos beat perfect stock.

A calm palette with one accent. Healthcare is light and air. One accent colour — for the booking button and key actions, no more.

A booking button on every screen. Patient ready on screen three? Button's right there. Scrolled to the price list? Button's right there. Don't make them hunt.

Typography for a 60+ audience. At least 16px body text and high contrast. If a grandmother can't read the price list, you've lost her — and the daughter who opened the site for her.

The price list as a design element. Not a PDF download, not "call for prices" — a tidy table that's easy to scroll on a phone.

What scares patients off

  • Stock models in white coats with perfect smiles
  • Full-screen carousels that rotate on their own
  • "Sale! Discount!" popups in the first 3 seconds — this is healthcare, not a clearance
  • Small light-grey text on white
  • A booking button you have to hunt for in a menu

Teardown: the Efedra redesign

An Odesa clinic came to us with an old site: confusing structure, dated design, buttons nobody noticed. We rebuilt everything around its two arms — dentistry and aesthetic medicine — with separate lead forms for each. The result: 3.2× more enquiries. Full breakdown — in the case study.

Speed is design too

The most beautiful layout doesn't work if it takes 5 seconds to load: the patient is already back in the search results. That's why our design ships with engineering: animations that don't lag, images optimised for mobile, Lighthouse 90+. Beautiful means fast, too.

Score your own site: 10 questions

  1. Does the site show real photos of your team?
  2. Is the booking button visible on every screen?
  3. Does the price list open without PDFs or phone calls?
  4. Is the body text readable on a phone without zooming?
  5. Does the site load in under 2 seconds?
  6. Is it clear within 5 seconds what clinic this is and where?
  7. Are there photos of the rooms and equipment?
  8. Do the reviews look real, with names?
  9. No auto-carousels or aggressive popups?
  10. Has the design gone unchanged for 5+ years? If so — it's time.

Fewer than 7 "yes" answers — your site is handing patients to competitors before the first call.

FAQ

How much does medical website design cost?
We don't sell design on its own — it's part of clinic website development from £3,500, together with the build, integrations and launch. A redesign of an existing site is quoted after a free teardown.
How many revision rounds are included?
Two rounds on the layouts — enough in 9 cases out of 10, because we agree structure and references before design starts. Further edits are hourly, and we say so honestly upfront.
Do you use templates?
No. Every layout is built for the specific clinic: its arms, audience and photos. Templates are instantly recognisable — patients and Google both notice.
What if we don't have good photos?
We start with what you have: tidy phone photos beat stock. In parallel we'll recommend a vetted photographer — one shoot covers the site, your Google Business Profile and socials for a year.
